Hello, I’m Abby Polly-Almanza…

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

I am inspired by the healing power of relationships. I specialize in helping women work through trauma to feel more alive and empowered, as well as helping couples reconnect and thrive.

I see healing through relationship each and every day. I’m passionate about helping women of all ages feel more at home within themselves and empowered in their relationships, as well as helping couples work through transitions and improve communication to truly feel safe with each other.

I believe that as humans, if we can connect, we can grow. Therapy works when you and I can build a safe and trusting relationship with one another that is a catalyst for change in other relationships. My clients describe me as calm and empathetic, with a sense of humor. When you meet with me, you and I will create a safe environment where you can explore and heal without judgment.

In my work with individuals and couples, my background as a Marriage and Family therapist provides a unique lens to understand the way your past, as well as the constellation of your current systems (extended family, school or work, and your larger community) are affecting you. I excel at helping women who are experiencing anxiety, perfectionism, low confidence/self-questioning, and relationship struggles feel more confident, assured and fulfilled. My specialties with couples include decreasing high conflict, repairing from infidelity, working through long-standing gridlocked issues, navigating life transitions, and parenting.

If you are ready to examine your experiences on a deeper level and explore what it could be like to make a change, I would love to work with you. Taking the first step to book a therapy appointment is a tremendous act of bravery. I am honored to walk alongside you on your journey and create a path to meaningful change together.

Training

I have worked with both individuals, couples, and families in a variety of treatment settings throughout my career. Before finding my home at SageWell, I worked in an agency providing long-term psychotherapy to adult individuals, couples, families, and children. I also have experience working with parents and young children in an early childhood education setting promoting strong parent-child bonds and effective co-parenting, as well as working in community mental health. I am a Level II Gottman trained couples therapist and am trained in the Incredible Years Parenting approach for children ages 2-8. My graduate thesis was a mixed methods study exploring the perspectives of foster and adoptive parents parenting children with trauma histories (The challenges and resources of adoptive and long-term foster parents of children with trauma histories: A mixed methods study).

Clinical Approach

My therapeutic approach is systemic and attachment-based. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, a large part of my philosophy hinges on the the way our biopsychosocial systems, such as family, school or work, and larger community, affect us. When I conceptualize an issue, I am curious not just about the individual or couple in front of me, but about the constellation of their whole system. A person also has systems within. I use an Internal Family Systems informed approach (often referred to as “parts’ work,” developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz), to uncover how the different states within you are relating to each other and may be using outdated templates that are keeping you stuck. This approach is powerful in helping you develop a new way of relating to yourself, not limited by rigid expectations or painful past experiences. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), often integrating it with an IFS informed approach, to help my clients heal from past trauma. EMDR allows people to experience change throughout their whole nervous system, allowing for more groundedness, presence, and joy.

In my work with couples, I use a combination of EFT (Emotionally-focused couples therapy), PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy) and Gottman modalities to improve connection, trust, and enhance the type of deep bond we desire with our partner. I incorporate experiential interventions in real time during our sessions to increase moments of joy, intimacy, and effective communication. I also use a solution focused approach that involves acquiring the necessary skills to move through conflict with greater ease and effectiveness. For couples with children, the work often involves helping partners learn to co-parent in ways that are developmentally attuned to their children and allow each member of the couple to stay true to themselves while aligned with the other. Lastly, I have advanced training working with couples in which there is a high degree of conflict. I am skilled at implementing specific interventions that first increase safety, followed by restoring intimacy and greater health in the relationship.
