Premarital Preparation

Premarital Preparation

It can be easy to spend so much time and energy planning your wedding, that you lose sight of preparing for the marriage that follows. You may find yourself becoming disconnected from your partner, wondering if you are on the same page about big life decisions, or simply wanting to be intentional in setting your marriage up for success.

All engaged couples want to have a successful, healthy marriage, however most of us are never taught how to do so. Premarital preparation provides education, skills, and a space to talk through important topics, allowing couples to build a thriving partnership from the start.

Our approach to premarital preparation combines our training and knowledge about relationships with a curriculum handcrafted to give couples the tools, up front, that they need to proactively build a strong and healthy partnership. Some of the topics we’ll cover include:

  • Views, perceptions and expectations of marriage

  • How the past shapes the present

  • Family planning and decision making

  • Healthy conflict and “how to fight”

  • Money & roles

  • Keeping and enhancing emotional and sexual intimacy

  • Religion, spirituality & culture

  • Boundaries, in-laws & extended families

Many couples avoid premarital counseling as they fear it may push religious or cultural beliefs that do not align with their values. As licensed psychotherapists, our training makes us uniquely poised to help you explore these important topics without judgment or any religious or cultural agenda. We provide a safe and affirming space for couples of all identities and backgrounds.

Couples that have seen us for premarital preparation describe experiencing improved ability to manage conflict, enhanced communication about life decisions, and increased feelings of closeness. This curriculum is also for couples who do not plan to marry, but would like to build a stronger, more intimate relationship with their committed partner.
