We specialize in supporting couples to improve their relationship through major life transitions where communication and connection can often break down. We also excel at helping couples navigate entrenched conflict patterns getting in the way of way of feeling safe, secure and fulfilled in the relationship.

  • Major life transitions such as getting married, welcoming a new baby, moving, or becoming empty nesters

  • Breakdowns in communication leading to frequent arguments or intense conflict

  • Feeling like you and your partner don’t understand each other well

  • Emotional distance from your partner—feeling like roommates or not emotionally close in the way you want in a partnership

  • A void in physical intimacy —lacking a spark, wishing your sexual relationship was different

Whether new or long-standing, these patterns can be extremely distressing. The good news is, changing course and creating a more fulfilling relationship with your partner is absolutely possible. Together we will identify what is at the root cause of the disconnection and what needs to change. From there, you and your partner will learn skills to improve communication, manage arguments, and enhance your “flow” as a couple in your day to day interactions. You will also learn new ways of engaging that allow your relationship to feel safer, more enjoyable and more fulfilling on a deeper level.

Our speciality training in couples therapy helps us create a treatment plan tailored to you and your partner. We offer longer-format sessions in order to produce change in your relationship more efficiently and effectively. Couples who have not had success in other couple’s therapy often tell us that working with us is the first time they have felt a true and lasting shift in their relationship.

 Couples Therapy FAQs

 
  • Sessions vary greatly from couple to couple based on what you and your partner are coming in for. Our therapists use a variety of approaches and techniques designed to identify the root cause of the problem and help you and your partner learn new skills, as well as experience new ways of engaging with each other. Sessions range from 60-120 minutes. You and your couple’s therapist will work together to determine the session length that will best suite you and your partner’s goals and needs.

  • Definitely. Couples therapy can be very effective over telehealth, as long as you and your partner are in the same physical location. While there are exceptions to this, our experiential approach works well when you and your partner can be face-to-face in person (see our blog article for more info. on this topic).

  • This is a question that comes up a lot. While there are some rare exceptions, sessions are structured to meet with you and your partner together. If one of you is late, we will wait to start the session until both of you are present. We only meet together because when you come to couples therapy, your relationship is our “client.” To work on the relationship, both of you need to be present together.

  • With psychotherapy, unlike some other types of treatment, it can be really challenging to predict length of treatment. One of the reasons for this is that every couple and situation has many unique variables, even if the general topics being brought in are similar. Another difficulty in making predictions is that as we are working together, other things in life can arise that need be be worked on. While making an exact prediction is tricky, as your therapist gets to know you we can talk broadly about timeline expectations and recommended session frequency.

  • Our therapists have advanced training in a variety of couples therapy modalities, including: PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy), EFT (Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy) and the Gottman Method. We also pull from our training and knowledge of attachment theory, family systems theory, behaviorism, neuroscience, and trauma-informed care.
